What is this phenomenon we can’t usually see or touch, and how can we get closer to it? Els Viaene investigates sound at its source.
Sound is an invisible and intangible phenomenon created by vibrations traveling through a medium such as air, water, or solid materials. These vibrations produce waves that we perceive as sound when they reach our ears. Sound can be explored through its physical properties and various visual manifestations. Viaene investigates the origins of sound, focusing on the moment it is formed. In her project Ways of seeing sound, she presents sound as a physical entity, blending science, sound, and sculpture to challenge our perceptions of seeing and hearing.
Using field recordings with small microphones to capture and magnify the hidden aural landscapes around us. Her work transforms these natural rhythms and textures into performances, compositions, and installations, creating immersive experiences that redefine the spaces they inhabit.
Ways of seeing sound is part of Oscillations – Exercises in Resilience, co-funded by the Creative Europe Program of the European Union and co-produced by Overtoon. Supported by Bergen City Council and Vestland County.
