Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream
I read the news today
Oh boy…
A new multi-media multi-channel, multi-tonal exhibition from Samuel Brzeski on making your early morning salutations, doing your breathing exercises, drinking your protein smoothie, singing to yourself in the shower, the feeling of the mouth in the shape of an O, the noise you make when you want to show someone you are attentively listening to what they are saying, the bumbling mumbles, the meandering hums, and other verbal rehearsals.
All of these vocalised elements of language come together in four acts of a kind of operatic babble in the burley word catches the erm. Brzeski works with language as raw material, through kinetic text videos, vocal compositions and performative installations, he explores how digital culture has reprogrammed our relationship to language.
The burly word catches the erm includes the launch of Vibrational Semantics publication series, which explores the voice’s ability to shift seamlessly between signification and sonority, from speech sound to noise. Text commissions from Cia Rinne, Holly Pester, Lisa Busby, Daniela Cascella and Marie Thams.
Vibrational Semantics publication series for sale from Lydgalleriet. Supported by Arts Council Norway, Norwegian Visual Artists Fund, Bergen City Council and Bergen Centre for Electronic Art. Curated by Julie Lillelien Porter.
