Christian Blom's mechanical mini orchestra carries the Persian mathematician al-Khowarizmi’s name.
A rewritten version of his name has become the word algorithm, which in mathematics is a formula or procedure. Al-Khowarizmi’s mechanical orchestra consists of bells, strings, horns and flutes, managed by small motors, microcontrollers and a computer. The algorithms in the computer is where the music takes shape. The algorithms make the music in real time and the composer is a facilitator, one that stakes out possible ways to go.
