As part of the Borealis Festival 2010, we present Gerhard Eckel's piece Catabolizer.
Catabolizer is a sound installation commissioned by Borealis, presented at the festival in collaboration with Lydgalleriet in Rom 8.
Creating music is a form of cooking. Listening to music is a form of ingestion. Cooking and eating as well as composing, performing and listening are conscious and deliberate acts. Cooking and composing create expectations; eating, performing and listening satisfy hunger. What happens to the sound after we have taken it in?
Digestion is an involuntary and unconscious bodily process. Catabolizer makes us experience this sound digestion process. It consumes sounds, chews them, swallows and digests them. It breaks them up into their components such that they can be absorbed by the body. The piece is a speaker installation which feeds on concerts played in the exhibition space.
