In the Event

In the Event is Sue Tompkins' new exhibition for Lydgalleriet, showing text, paper works and the printed word to represent both sound and meaning.

Drawing inspiration from everyday events and experiences Tompkins re-contextualises language through writing and performing, giving it a different kind of rhythm on paper. Through her work she transfers multi-dimensional performance ideas of rhythm, tempo and composition in to the gallery space.

An exciting opportunity to hear a brand new performative text work by Tompkins, performed within the white cube of her Lydgalleriet exhibition. Described as 'strung- out exercises in associative free thought: performance poetry that moves from the page to the voice, from speech to song, from song to signal, from signal to pure sound'.

Sue Tompkins draws on her experiences as lead singer with now disbanded post-punk group Life Without Buildings to place her texts in a visceral yet intimate context, where the energy of the live band still fizzles behind her. Written, yet improvised, her performances bring her texts off the page with a unique combination of inflected speech and interrupted movement.

The opening night we also screen the film Country Grammar by Luke Fowler, with its starting point in a 2003 text performance by Tompkins of the same name. Only this one screening. Curated by Julie Lillelien Porter and co-produced by Lydgalleriet and Borealis.
