Drones and Headphones

by
Poster design: Blank Blank

Drones are persistent tones, chords or tone clusters that are tucked up like bardunes in a longer, obedient course. We know them from folk music, the barduntones in the bagpipe, the dulcimer and the hurdy-gurdy.

From the base note of the Australian didgeridoo and Mongolian string song, or Indian drone instruments such as Tanpura or Ottu. The drone is universal and probably the musical element man first learned the effect of, next to rhythm.

In Drones and Headphones, we try to use the intimate sphere of headphones to create comfortable listening situations, with sun loungers and shielded shutters. We concentrate on sound works that require a long time and personal focus, works that invite the audience to take a small trip in internal exile. Let the dope work. Sit still, let the queen take responsibility for the body's rhythm and put the brain's analytical weapon aside for a little while.

Featuring Phill Niblock, Eliane Radigue, Brian Eno, Jim O'Rourke, Jacob Kirkegaard, Merzbow, Leif Elggren, Maeror Tri, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Stars of the Member, and Tangerine Dream.
