Samuel Brzeski

Woke up, fell out of bed

Dragged a comb across my head

Found my way downstairs and drank a cup

And looking up, I noticed I was late

Found my coat and grabbed my hat

Made the bus in seconds flat

Found my way upstairs and had a smoke

And somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I read the news today

Oh boy…

A new multi-media multi-channel multi-tonal exhibition from Samuel Brzeski on making your early morning salutations, doing your breathing exercises, drinking your protein smoothie, singing to yourself in the shower, that nice feeling of the mouth in the shape of an O, that noise that you make when you want to show someone you are attentively listening to what they are saying, the bumbling mumbles, the meandering hums, and other verbal rehearsals. All of these vocalised elements of language come together in four acts of a kind of operatic babble.

Samuel Brzeski is an artist and writer who works with language as raw material. Through kinetic text videos, vocal compositions, and performative installations, he explores how digital culture has reprogrammed our relationship to language. Brzeski has been working with Lydgalleriet as a writer and editor since 2020. The burly word catches the erm includes the launch of Vibrational Semantics publication series, which explores the voice’s ability to shift seamlessly between signification and sonority, from speech sound to noise. Text commissions from Cia Rinne, Holly Pester, Lisa Busby, Daniela Cascella and Marie Thams.

Part of the Creative Europe project Oscillations – Exercises in Resilience. With technical assistance from Oda Tungodden, Kristen Keegan and Kjetil Smedal/ Aldea Centre for Art and Technology, Supported by Arts Council Norway, Billedkunstnernes Vederlagsfond, Bergen City Council and Bergen senter for elektronisk kunst.
